U.S. Forces Continue to Support Philippine Military Operations Against Abu Sayyaf Terrorists

U.S. military forces assigned to the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines JSOTF-P remain in the southern Philippines (Mindanao) assisting the Philippine government with operations against the Abu Sayyaf terrorist group. Post 2001, U.S. forces on Mindanao numbered in the thousands-- the JSOTFP currently has several hundred U.S. military personnel providing support and training to the Philippine military.

A 26 May 2013 NY Times article http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/27/world/asia/philippine-forces-clash-with-abu-sayyaf.html?smid=fb-share&_r=0  reports on a encounter between Philippine marines and Abu Sayyaf guerrillas which left seven Philippine marines dead.  As this latest clash demonstrates, the fight is ongoing and Mindanao continues to be a dangerous place.
