In the odd WWII stories file--several times during WWII--Tomoyuki Yamashita, The Tiger of Malaya, traveled to Germany and met with the Führer Adolf Hitler. While discussions of military related issues dominated the meetings-- supposedly, the two shared a mutual interest in plundered gold. Ironically, late in the war, Japan tried to rescue Hitler's financially ruined economy, reportedly, with a shipment of two tons of gold. An Imperial Japanese Navy submarine laden with the gold was targeted by U.S. aircraft. Today, the sub and entombed crew, lay under 17,000 feet of water, on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean-- including the gold. The wreck was located in 1995, but efforts to recover the gold have been in vain.
