U.S. Reduces Military Presence in Southern Philippines

The Philippine government recently announced that the U.S. has reduced the number of special operations troops from 500-600 to less than 200 personnel.  U.S. troops began arriving in the southern Philippines in 2002 in part of Washington's War on Terror campaign.   Recent Muslim separatist insurgency operations could complicate Manila's desired to declare the Muslim unrest over.  The U.S.'s reduction of military forces in the Philippines is part of the Pentagon's overall worldwide reduction in anti-terrorist operations.
